De Troch. Wambeek
Lambic. Authentic vs non authentic. Chapeau Banane.
De Troch is often frowned upon because of their Chapeau beers; Chapeau Banane, Cerise, Abricot, Exotic,….Sugary sweet beers that do have a lambic base but hold nothing in common with what a true, traditional lambic is. Sugars, syrups, filtered, pasteurized,….It’s this range of beers that saved them from bankruptcy in the hard years though, digging into foreign beer markets where there is no lambic tradition. De Troch holds a small treasure hidden however. Their base lambic is brewed according traditional methods and the pure, straight lambic that ages on wooden barrels can be a real thing of beauty there. Fresh, lemony, fruity, easy as a summer breeze. You don’t find it often. The potential is there to make a good product. The Oude Kriek with Schaarbeekse krieken they released in 2014 was an instant hit. Their Oude Geuze might not be the complex sipper like some other traditional OG’s but it certainly has it merits. Let’s hope they make more of these traditional lambic beers.
